About the South London Concert Series

Launched in November 2013, the South London Concert Series is an innovative concert concept which showcases young and emerging professional musicians (primarily pianists). The series is unique as it also offers performance opportunities to non-professional and talented amateur pianists and other musicians by giving them the chance to perform alongside professionals in the same formal concert setting.

Founded and curated by harpsichordist and piano teacher Lorraine Liyanage and pianist, piano teacher and classical music blogger Frances Wilson, the series has been praised for its unique and accessible approach to music making, combining quality chamber music with conviviality to recreate the ethos and atmosphere of the nineteenth-century European cultural salon. Concerts are held in intimate and unusual venues, while programmes have a special focus on lesser-known and rarely-performed repertoire. Audience members have the chance to meet the artists after the concert and to socialise with other music lovers.

As part of our new At Home With Music display, we are hosting a live performance on our 1772 Kirckman harpsichord in the Music Gallery on the last Tuesday of each month.

On Tuesday 30 September, Lorraine Liyanage will perform selected pieces.

Lorraine Liyanage

J.S. Bach – Allemande from French Suite no.4
Sweelinck – Ballo del Granduca
J.S. Bach – Gigue from French Suite no.5
Graham Lynch – Ay!
Soler – Sonata no.7 in C major

Lorraine Liyanage is a harpsichord based in East Dulwich. She will perform the UK premiere of Graham Lynch’s piece Ay! for solo harpsichord. ‘Ay!’ being a declamation of pain or sorrow that appears in some of the early poems of Lorca. The piece is a fusion of a tango rhythms with modal Spanish melodic lines and harmonies.

Inside the Fazioli Pianoforti Factory

I spent a thoroughly enjoyable day at the Fazioli Pianoforti Factory in the company of piano teachers and technicians. We were shown around by Paolo Fazioli, the man behind these wonderful pianos. We saw the entire process of creating a piano from start to finish. The factory houses a concert hall and Australian pianist John Granger Fisher played a programme of music by Liszt, Scarlatti, Brahms and Chopin.

Fazioli Pianos has been producing grand and concert grand pianos since 1981, when the company was established by the engineer and pianist Paolo Fazioli. His love for music, scientific expertise, skill as an artisan and his passion for research combined with rigorous material selection make every Fazioli piano a masterpiece that combines unique functional, aesthetic and sound characteristics.  The factory is situated in Sacile, in the province of Pordenone, 60 km north east of Venice, in an area that boasts a time honoured and prestigious tradition in the art of wood working.

In 2001, production moved to a new 5,000 square metre complex that was specially designed to cater for the specific requirements of piano construction. It was built to meet the most modern criteria for practicality, luminosity and climate control.
