TBSHS Music Aptitude Test 2027: How to Use the Final Weeks
The Bishop’s Stortford High School Music Aptitude Test takes place on Friday 2 October 2026, giving applicants just under three weeks of preparation time.
Before worrying about the test, families should deal with the application itself: the school’s Supplementary Information Form must reach TBSHS by 4pm on Thursday 24 September for a child to take the Music Aptitude Test.

Four areas, not sixty unrelated questions
TBSHS has published a clear test structure.
Candidates answer 60 multiple-choice questions: 15 each on pitch, rhythm, melody and texture. The listening recording lasts approximately 35 minutes.
That makes the remaining preparation period much easier to organise.
Rather than simply doing one complete mock test after another, look at the four skills separately.
If rhythm is consistently strong but texture remains uncertain, spending equal amounts of time on both is not efficient.
If pitch answers are inconsistent, find out why. Is the child genuinely struggling to hear the difference, forgetting the first sound before comparing the second, or hearing correctly and then changing their answer?
The same score can conceal very different problems.
Pitch
Practise comparing sounds without rushing.
Children often improve when the listening task is initially exaggerated — clearly high versus low — before gradually making the differences smaller.
The goal is not terminology. It is accurate auditory discrimination.
Rhythm
A strong internal pulse is extremely useful.
Clapping, tapping and reproducing short patterns can help children retain rhythms rather than treating them as a collection of isolated noises.
Keep exercises short enough that concentration remains good.
Melody
Melody combines listening with musical memory.
Children may recognise that two phrases are different but struggle to remember exactly where the change happened.
Short melodic comparison exercises can therefore be more valuable than simply asking whether two tunes are identical.
Texture
Texture asks the ear to listen vertically: what is happening simultaneously?
For some children this feels less instinctive than following a melody.
Practising with combinations of two, three or more notes and learning to separate layers within musical sound can make these questions feel considerably less mysterious.
Don’t turn the final weeks into a siege
There is still useful time before 2 October.
There is not, however, any benefit in exhausting a ten- or eleven-year-old with hours of daily practice.
A short session in which the child is attentive and learning something is worth considerably more than a long one completed because somebody has decided that thirty more questions must be finished.
As the test approaches, confidence should come from understanding the tasks better — not from being told vaguely that everything will be fine.
Individual TBSHS preparation on Zoom
