The first-round SW Herts Music Aptitude Test takes place after school on Monday 7 September 2026. With only four days remaining, preparation should now become shorter, calmer and more selective.
Registration has closed, so parents should concentrate first on the practical information supplied through the Consortium Parent Portal. Check the allocated test centre, arrival instructions and travel arrangements rather than relying on information received by another family.

The first-round listening test
The test contains 60 questions divided between pitch, melody, rhythm and texture. It lasts approximately 45 minutes and does not require music-theory qualifications.

At this point, children do not need endless test papers. The most useful work is usually to recognise where uncertainty remains and address it without creating unnecessary pressure.

A focused final assessment
A generic practice paper cannot tell a family why an individual child is hesitating. One candidate may need help distinguishing close pitches, while another understands the sounds but loses confidence when selecting an answer.
During an individual session, we listen to the child, establish what is already secure and concentrate on the areas where focused support can still be useful.

Do not postpone Round Two preparation
The Consortium plans to release first-round scores at approximately midday on Thursday 17 September. Second-round assessments begin on Monday 21 September, leaving successful candidates very little time to prepare after receiving their invitation.
The second stage requires one instrumental or vocal piece lasting no more than three minutes. Examiners assess accuracy, musicality and musical communication rather than awarding marks for the technical difficulty of the piece.
A prospective performance should therefore already be secure. The final days before Round One can include a little careful performance work without distracting from the immediate listening assessment.

A calm final weekend
During the last few days:
- use brief listening sessions rather than exhausting practice;
- revisit known difficulties without introducing everything at once;
- keep the potential performance piece comfortable and familiar;
- check the Parent Portal and test-centre correspondence;
- protect normal meals, rest and sleep.
The Consortium’s official 2027 testing calendar should remain the primary source for administrative dates.
