Music Scholarship Success at The Gilberd School: Ranked 30th Out of 164 Applicants
Every year, thousands of families across the UK apply for secondary school places through Music Aptitude and Music Scholarship criteria. These places are extremely competitive and can offer a valuable route into outstanding schools without needing to live within the usual catchment area.
At SE22 Piano School, we specialise in preparing students for Music Aptitude Tests and Music Scholarship entrance assessments across the UK. With nearly 20 years of experience, we have helped many talented young musicians secure places at leading secondary schools through structured preparation, musicianship training, and confidence-building support.
Although many schools state that “no prior musical experience or preparation is required”, our experience tells a very different story. In reality, students who perform strongly in these assessments almost always have a solid musical foundation, good listening skills, rhythmic awareness, pitch recognition, and strong concentration under pressure.
That is why preparation matters.
A Wonderful Result for The Gilberd School in Colchester
Earlier this summer, we were delighted to support a student preparing for the Music Aptitude Test at The Gilberd School.
We recently received this lovely feedback from the family:
“Please could you pass the message to Mirna to say that we got [Name Removed]’s musical aptitude test results today and he ranked 30 out of 164 applicants. This means he definitely will get a place as the top 32 children are guaranteed offers.
Thank you to Mirna for her support and encouragement, I am absolutely certain that was a factor in this achievement.”
Results like this are always incredibly rewarding. Ranking in the top 30 out of more than 160 applicants is a significant achievement and reflects both the student’s hard work and the importance of focused preparation.
How We Help Students Prepare
Our Music Aptitude Test tutoring focuses on the key areas commonly assessed by UK secondary schools, including:
- Pitch recognition
- Rhythm and pulse
- Musical memory
- Listening skills
- Pattern recognition
- Concentration and exam technique
- Confidence under timed conditions
Lessons are tailored individually to each student and delivered online via Zoom, making them accessible across the UK and internationally.
We work with complete beginners as well as students already learning instruments, and we help families understand what schools are really looking for during the assessment process.
When Should Preparation Begin?
We strongly recommend beginning preparation at the start of Year 6 wherever possible. This allows enough time to build core musicianship skills gradually and confidently, rather than trying to cram shortly before the examination.
A structured plan across the academic year can make a substantial difference in both confidence and performance.
