Liverpool College Music Aptitude Test Preparation for 2027 Entry

Liverpool College offers 10% of its Year 7 places on the basis of musical aptitude. For families who registered for September 2027 entry, attention now turns from the application process to the Music Aptitude Test itself.

At SE22 Piano School, we provide specialist one-to-one Music Aptitude Test preparation online via Zoom. Children applying to Liverpool College can therefore work with us wherever they live.

Liverpool College Music Aptitude Test for 2027 entry

Liverpool College uses a two-stage Music Aptitude Test. The tests aim to identify musical aptitude rather than previous musical training or achievement.

The College states that children do not need previous musical knowledge. It does not consider music examination certificates or teacher references when selecting pupils through musical aptitude.

Candidates first take Test 1. Children who achieve the score required by Liverpool College then receive an invitation to Test 2. The College allocates its music aptitude places in test-score order.

Registration for 2027 entry closed on 25 September 2026. Families who registered should now follow the testing information they receive directly from Liverpool College.

What does Music Aptitude Test preparation involve?

Liverpool College states that children do not need to prepare for its test, and the College does not provide practice papers. We think it is important to be clear about that.

Our lessons do not attempt to predict Liverpool College’s questions or teach children a set of answers. Instead, we help pupils develop the listening skills that underpin musical aptitude assessments. We also help them become comfortable concentrating on unfamiliar musical material.

One-to-one lessons allow us to adapt the work to each child. Rather than repeatedly practising things they already find easy, we can focus on listening skills that need more attention.

Preparing without over-preparing

Music Aptitude Tests assess aptitude, so preparation should remain calm and proportionate.

Some children simply benefit from learning how to listen carefully and respond to unfamiliar musical material. This can make the experience feel much less daunting. Other children may benefit from identifying particular areas of aural listening that need more attention.

Our aim is not to turn the assessment into an exercise in drilling. We want children to listen carefully, understand what the test asks of them and approach the experience with confidence.
