Kingsdale Foundation School offers Music Scholarship admissions for children applying to Year 7 in September 2027.
For a young musician, this is not simply a question of playing two pieces well. Kingsdale’s published assessment brings together performance, listening and written musical understanding. The most useful preparation is therefore individual: identifying what a child already does naturally, where they become less secure, and what will make the greatest difference before the assessment.

Kingsdale Music Scholarship assessment: what the school confirms
For September 2027 entry, Kingsdale states that all Music Scholarship applicants complete:
- two performances on their chosen instrument(s) and/or voice;
- an aural test;
- written musical aptitude tests.
The school allocates 45 marks to the two performances, 25 marks to the aural test and 30 marks to the written musical aptitude tests.
Optional sight-reading on the applicant’s chosen instrument(s) is also available. Kingsdale states that this carries up to 20 additional marks where the assessor considers the applicant competent in sight-reading; where it is not accepted, it does not contribute to the overall score.
This is important because there is no benefit in adding sight-reading simply because it is available. It should be a considered choice based on the child’s existing confidence and reading fluency.
Key dates for September 2027 entry
Kingsdale’s Music Scholarship assessments run on selected weekends between Saturday 19 September and Sunday 11 October 2026.
The deadline to book a scholarship assessment online or submit the Supplementary Form is Monday 5 October 2026. Kingsdale says assessment outcomes will be posted to parents on Thursday 15 October 2026.
Applicants must also submit their Common Application Form to their home local authority by Saturday 31 October 2026.
Parents should always check Kingsdale’s own admissions pages and documents before acting, as schools can amend arrangements.

What makes preparation individual
A generic checklist can be useful, but it cannot tell a family what matters most for their child.
One young musician may have a strong ear and expressive performance instincts but need help making rhythm more precise. Another may read confidently and understand musical notation, yet become hesitant when asked to listen, respond or perform under pressure. A pianist may have two technically secure pieces but need help shaping them into performances that sound purposeful rather than merely practised.
The strongest use of preparation time is to establish an honest starting point and prioritise carefully.
In an individual session, we look at the child’s instrument or voice, chosen repertoire, listening skills, written musical understanding and confidence in an assessment setting. The aim is not to force every child through the same template. It is to help them present their own musicianship with clarity and calm.

How Kingsdale awards places
Kingsdale explains that Music Scholarship candidates are assessed and ranked after all assessments have been completed. To secure a place through the scholarship criterion, applicants must reach the school’s full scholarship standard and be ranked within the top 15% of the school’s Year 7 admission number.
Reaching scholarship standard does not itself guarantee an offer: the final outcome also depends on the coordinated admissions process and how Kingsdale is ranked on the child’s Common Application Form. Scholarship places are not offered before 1 March 2027.
That is why sensible preparation matters. No reputable teacher can promise an outcome, but thoughtful individual work can make sure a child’s preparation is directed where it will genuinely help.
