How Singing Helps Develop Aural Skills for the Music Aptitude Test

When preparing for the Music Aptitude Test, listening practice is often the main focus. However, one of the most effective ways to improve a child’s aural skills is through something very simple: singing.

Singing turns listening into an active process. Instead of hearing a sound and recognising it internally, the student must reproduce it using their voice.

This strengthens several key skills assessed in the Music Aptitude Test:

  • matching pitch accurately
  • remembering and repeating melody
  • maintaining a clear sense of rhythm
  • listening more carefully to musical detail

Music Aptitude Test listening papers used by schools such as Ashmole Academy, Dame Alice Owen’s School, Kingsdale Foundation School, Prendergast School, Twyford School, and Mill Hill County High School require students to respond quickly to unfamiliar musical material.

Singing helps make these responses more secure.

When a child sings a note or a short phrase back, any uncertainty becomes immediately noticeable. With regular practice, the ear becomes more precise and the response more confident.

Singing also supports real-time listening. Students who are comfortable using their voice often find it easier to respond in situations where quick musical decisions are required.

This does not need to be formal or complicated. Simple activities such as echoing short phrases, singing back notes, or repeating patterns can make a significant difference over time.

Because each Music Aptitude Test is slightly different, developing strong aural skills is more useful than focusing on one specific test format.

For families who would like to support this aspect of musical development more broadly, singing lessons can also provide a structured way to strengthen listening, pitch accuracy and musical confidence alongside MAT preparation.

For families in East Dulwich and the SE22 area, a limited number of in-person Music Aptitude Test preparation sessions are currently available. These sessions include structured aural training through listening and vocal response.
