The Gilberd School Music Aptitude Test 2027 admissions process offers children living in Colchester or Tendring an additional route to a Year 7 place.
The school can allocate up to 32 places through musical aptitude for September 2027 entry. Applicants must submit The Gilberd School’s Musical Aptitude Supplementary Information Form and complete their local authority secondary-school application.

The school will arrange an individual date and time for each applicant after receiving the Musical Aptitude Supplementary Information Form.
Results will be issued before the secondary-school application deadline so that parents can consider the outcome when ordering their school preferences.
How to apply for a Gilberd music aptitude place
Parents must complete two separate applications.
First, submit The Gilberd School’s Musical Aptitude Supplementary Information Form by Thursday 24 September 2026. The form can be emailed to admissions@gilberd.com.
Second, submit the local authority Common Application Form by 31 October 2026. Families applying through Essex can find information on the Essex County Council school-admissions website.
Submitting the SIF does not replace the local authority application. Both parts must be completed.

Who is eligible to apply?
Music aptitude places fall under Priority C of The Gilberd School’s admissions policy.
Applicants must live in the Colchester or Tendring area shown in the maps within the approved policy at the time of application. Parents should check those maps carefully rather than relying on general descriptions of the school’s surrounding area.
The admissions policy also explains that applicants are considered under Priority A and Priority B first, where applicable. The remaining Priority C places are then allocated in music-aptitude rank order.
What does the Gilberd assessment involve?
The current SIF describes a group aural assessment covering:
- pitch;
- rhythm;
- melody; and
- expressive intent.
Applicants will also participate in an aptitude workshop. The school combines the scores from the aural assessment and workshop before placing candidates in rank order.
There is no published pass mark. When more eligible children apply than there are available music places, the applicants with the highest aptitude scores receive priority.
Supplementary evidence is not considered. Parents should not send instrumental examination certificates, school reports, references or other evidence of musical achievement.
Applicants may have received no formal musical training. The current SIF does not list a separate instrumental or vocal performance audition.
Can children prepare for the Gilberd assessment?
The school states that the assessment “cannot be prepared for”. This reflects its purpose as an assessment of musical aptitude rather than learned theory, instrumental grades or knowledge from a particular syllabus.
No tutor can provide the exact Gilberd assessment, predict its confidential content or guarantee a selective place.
Nevertheless, musical listening develops through experience. Children can strengthen their ability to listen carefully, retain short musical ideas, recognise changes and respond confidently to unfamiliar material.

Individual preparation with SE22 Piano School
Generic exercises cannot show why a particular child is losing accuracy, hesitating or misunderstanding an aural task.
During an individual Zoom lesson, we can observe the child’s current responses and identify where guidance may be useful. Depending on the applicant, preparation may support:
- pitch and melodic awareness;
- rhythmic security;
- musical memory;
- concentration;
- careful listening;
- confidence with unfamiliar tasks; and
- calm responses under assessment conditions.
We tailor the lesson to the individual child, the school’s published requirements and the time remaining before the assessment. We do not follow the same preparation plan with every applicant.

A previous Gilberd success
SE22 Piano School has previously supported a Gilberd applicant who ranked 30th out of 164 candidates.

That result belonged to one individual pupil and cannot guarantee the outcome of another application. It does, however, demonstrate the value of calm encouragement, individual attention and focused musical preparation.
Why do different Gilberd pages mention 30 and 32 places?
The Gilberd School’s general admissions webpage currently refers to 30 music places.
However, its approved 2027–2028 Admissions Policy gives a published admission number of 320 and states that up to 32 places, or 10% of the intake, may be allocated under Priority C.
We have therefore used the figure published in the approved policy.
Gilberd application checklist
Before the deadlines, parents should:
- confirm that their address falls within the eligible Colchester or Tendring area;
- read the current admissions policy and Musical Aptitude SIF;
- submit the SIF by 24 September 2026;
- complete the local authority application by 31 October 2026;
- provide accurate contact information;
- watch for the individual October appointment; and
- follow any further instructions issued by the school.
