Confidence in Round Two: Why Calm Listening Matters as Much as Ability

For many families preparing for the Music Aptitude Test, most attention is placed on Round One: the listening paper, the multiple-choice questions, and the score that determines which students progress.

However, in many schools the second round of assessment is where real differentiation occurs.

Round Two often includes practical listening tasks such as:

  • clapping back rhythms
  • repeating short melodic phrases
  • identifying instruments and texture
  • responding immediately after hearing musical material

Schools including Kingsdale, Prendergast, Ashmole Academy, Dame Alice Owen’s, Twyford, and Haberdashers’ frequently use some form of practical musical response in the second stage of the Music Aptitude Test or music scholarship process.

These exercises test more than musical aptitude. They also test composure.

A capable child may struggle if the format feels unfamiliar. Clapping a rhythm back to an adult, repeating a melody after hearing it once, or making a quick musical decision under pressure introduces a psychological shift: the task becomes a performance situation rather than a private listening exercise.

Equally, students who have practised these skills regularly often respond calmly and accurately because the format feels familiar.

Confidence in Round Two develops through repeated exposure to:

  • rhythmic imitation
  • melodic recall
  • listening for changes in pitch and texture
  • responding quickly without over-analysing

When these activities have been practised over time, responses become instinctive rather than analytical.

By the time the real assessment arrives, the structure of the task feels recognisable. Mistakes can be corrected quickly and the student can continue without losing focus.

Musical aptitude may open the door to Round Two. Calm, confident listening often determines what happens next.

For families based in East Dulwich, SE22 and surrounding areas, a limited number of in-person preparation sessions are currently available to help students practise Round Two listening responses in a structured environment.
