Ashmole Academy Music Aptitude Test 2027: What to Expect & How to Prepare

Applications are now open for the Ashmole Academy Music Aptitude Test for September 2027 entry.

This admissions route is designed to identify musical potential, not prior training. Children from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply—even if they have never had formal music lessons.

What is the Music Aptitude Test?

Ashmole Academy offers 20 music places out of 261 Year 7 places, awarded to students who demonstrate strong listening skills and musical awareness.

The first stage is a written listening test, lasting around 40–50 minutes, with approximately 60 questions covering:

  • Pitch (high vs low sounds)
  • Rhythm and note length
  • Dynamics (loud and soft)
  • Musical texture (layers of sound)
  • Tempo (speed of music)
  • Melodic shape and patterns

No instrument, no theory, no prior experience required—just ears, focus, and curiosity.

How to Prepare (This is where most families go wrong)

Because the test is based on listening, many assume children can’t prepare.

That’s not true.

Musical listening is a trainable skill, just like reading or language. With the right guidance, children can quickly improve their ability to:

  • Recognise patterns in sound
  • Track musical changes
  • Focus under timed conditions
  • Respond confidently to unfamiliar music

Final Thought

The Ashmole test isn’t about what a child already knows—it’s about how they hear, process, and respond to music.

And that can absolutely be developed.
