We encourage the development of theory and musicianship skills from the earliest stages of instrumental learning. As instrumental skills progress, development in music theory and musicianship becomes increasingly important in helping students to perform with sensitivity, understanding and confidence. Music theory is examined through written papers. Papers last between one and a half and three hours depending on the grade. We understand that theory is a bit of a 'dry subject', particularly with our younger students, therefore we try and make it as fun and stimulating as possible. We teach theory from pre-Grade 1 through to Grade 8 level. Theory exams are taught alongside graded music exams. |

We use some fantastic books for our young students. Lina Ng's sticker books provide the foundation of music theory knowledge and are loved by all of our students. The stickers really capture their imagination and keep their interest.
We have a 100% pass rate for theory exams, with many students receiving distinctions for their examinations. Music theory is taught as part of the school curriculum so we advise all parents to enter their children for the written examinations as it is good practice to become accustomed to the formal examination environment. We present a Theory Cup annually at our Awards Ceremony. |
