Should I purchase or hire an instrument?

ALWAYS take the advice of a teacher before purchasing or hiring an instrument. With more expensive instruments it is often sensible to hire for a few months before deciding to buy - the hire charge can often be put towards buying the instrument.

Before commiting to buying a piano, a keyboard is fine for beginners. Have a look at these options for the various keyboards available.

What can parents do to help?
  • Try to get your child to make a commitment in time (say one year) to instrument studies.
  • Offer compliments and give encouragement as often as possible.
  • Listen to your child’s practice and acknowledge improvement.
  • Encourage your child to talk about the lessons.
  • Encourage your child to listen to a wide variety of music. We organise several trips to venues in London to hear and take part in live music performances.
  • Ensure the instrument is in good working order.
  • Encourage your child to join bands, orchestras etc. when they are proficient enough. We will regularly arrange for duet and trio performances with older and younger students at our twice-yearly concerts.
  • Keep in contact with the instrument teacher via the practice chart or practice book.
